Ellis Island was one of the main
immigration stations of the 1800’s.
Before Ellis Island was built, it was
referred to as Castle Garden. It
couldn’t handle the new flow of
immigrants, so, in 1892, the U.S.
government put in a new station.
The island that it was on was enlarged
to 3.3 acres and, as you may have
guessed, renamed to Ellis Island.
In the next two years, it was increased
even more to 14 acres.
